Gap year students need to remember the basics of travelling abroad to ensure that their adventures are memorable for the right reasons, according to an expert.
Michelle Reesman, executive director of Passport Health Colorado, said that while young travellers might feel invincible, they need to put the same care into their health and safety as they do into their destination choice.
Gap year students should get advice from a travel health professional before they embark for new shores, with recommendations needed for immunisations and malaria among others.
"Protect yourself from insect bites. Use insect repellents on all exposed areas of skin. If not staying in an air-conditioned room, use a bed net," she advised, adding that repellents can also be sprayed on clothing and bedding.
Ms Reesman also warned gap year students to be aware of local laws, with some countries having severe penalties for illegal drugs and excessive alcohol use.
Richard Oliver, chief executive of Year Out Group, added that before a gap year student heads abroad, they should also find out about what is included in their health insurance cover and what training and pre-departure briefings they need to attend.
