Those planning a gap year in Thailand should keep abreast of developments in the country and in Bangkok in particular.
Thailand is a very popular gap year destination but for some time there has been political unrest in the country. In the early hours of 27 April, substantial numbers of troops deployed in Central Bangkok. The entire BTS Sky train service has been suspended in Bangkok causing major disruption. On 26/27 April there were at least eight incidents in various parts of Thailand involving protestors setting up barricades, in some instances leading to clashes with the security forces. There is escalating tension and the risk of violence across the country. This has led the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office to advise against all but essential travel to the whole of Thailand.
Those planning to take a gap year program in Thailand in the immediate future should consult their gap year provider, who will be able to advise whether or not your placement can proceed and offer advice as to how your flights and insurance might be affected.
