Undertaking voluntary work abroad in South Africa was a real eye-opener for Australian student Cathy Read.
The 20-year-old decided to take a gap year after finishing high school, and signed up for an organised education placement with Lattitude Global Volunteering.
"I went to South Africa and was in a school for children with cerebral palsy and other learning disabilities," she told The Chronicle.
"I wanted to do something not focused on myself."
Cathy said the experience of being in a foreign country and different culture was invaluable, and helped her to become more independent and tolerant.
"I now have a better understanding of other cultures and am more accepting of other people," she told the news provider.
Taking a gap year will create some of the best memories you will ever have, Cathy advised.
A Year Out Group member, Lattitude Global Volunteering has helped organise gap years abroad since 1972.
Lasting between four and 12 months, the organisation's placements are designed to allow a complete immersion in the local culture and community.
