People planning to head overseas on a gap year should ensure they obtain appropriate insurance cover, it has been claimed.
Speaking to This Is Money, Mike Powell, analyst at financial data provider Defaqto, urged people to take out a policy with a specialist insurer.
He explained that standard insurance is rarely suitable for people heading abroad on a fully fledged gap year.
"Check that you will be covered for all the activities you want to do," Mr Powell advised.
He said people need cover if they are planning to participate in extreme sports or skiing, and if they are aiming to get a job during their gap year.
Writing for the news provider, Jo Thornhill said ensuring you have sufficient medical and emergency cover is also vital.
This is because hospital bills in countries such as Australia and America will be high, and gappers need to ensure they are protected in the event of illness or injury.
