Credit cards can be important on gap years

People heading abroad on a gap year should ensure they take out the best credit card possible, it has been claimed.

Writing for the Guardian, Jill Insley said people should have a credit card as back-up if they are abroad for any length of time.

She urged gappers to choose a card that doesn't charge 2.75 per cent every time people make a transaction in a foreign country.

Ms Insley said there are numerous options suitable for people heading abroad, including those with no minimum monthly funding requirement or overseas charges on purchases or cash.

"It's essential to set up online banking before you go so you can manage your money while abroad," she stated.

"And make sure you advise your bank and card providers that you will be travelling: they are likely to block your accounts otherwise, suspecting fraud."

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office urges Brits heading abroad to take financial planning seriously - ensuring they have access to money in a variety of formats, including cash and card, at all times.
