Planning is an irreplaceable commodity for people taking a gap year, it has been claimed.
According to the Hertfordshire Mercury, people need to prepare, and prepare well, if they want to make the most of their year out.
"The first decision to take is a rough estimate of how long you hope or plan to be away for," the news provider stated.
"The length of time you afford your trip will help dictate and frame your destinations, activities and, perhaps most importantly, your finances."
The Mercury editorial noted that many people save up for their gap year adventure in the year before travelling, but others head abroad with a more limited budget.
If this is their approach, finding work overseas is important, it stated.
"Many gap years involve working a sun or ski season, or even both, at a sports resort, thus granting you the best of both worlds," the news provider said.
"You could even take out a loan to fund your travels. If you select this option, be sure to get the best deal."
Wherever people choose to go on their gap year and whatever the purpose of the trip, travellers need to make sure they take precautions, the Mercury said.
"A sense of adventure and entering the unknown is all part of the thrill but that's no need to take unnecessary risks," it added.
"Money-wise, keep it not only safe and hidden, but an emergency stash free and easy to call upon should everything go pear shaped."
