People looking to find a gap year job in a foreign country need to be persistent, it has been claimed.
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) said it can take time and a number of applications for gappers to secure paid employment.
But in the majority of countries, those people who are willing to keep trying tend to find work in the end.
This can help fund their travel plans, and allow people to extend their gap year longer than they may have originally intended.
According to the FCO, proper preparation and planning can hold the key to finding employment quickly with the minimum of hassle.
The department urges gap year travellers to find out what paperwork and permits they need in advance.
If possible, people should also attempt to learn the local language, the FCO advised.
"Few employers will hire you without a good grasp of the local lingo," it stated.
