Undertaking work experience during a gap year can provide important impetus for young people's careers, it has been suggested.
According to the government information portal Directgov, taking a gap year can look good on people's CV.
"Potential employers see that you have spent time broadening your horizons and learning new skills," it stated.
Directgov suggested that volunteering for an industry or organisation you would like to get into in the future shows a dedication to career advancement.
And employers are likely to recognise this at the interview stage.
"If you want to return to college or university, a gap year shows that you are committed to your education," Directgov added.
"You may find that you approach learning in a different way after a year out."
