Gap year participants have been issued with a number of tips for working in a foreign country.
Many travellers find casual labour during their spell overseas, helping to top up funds and enjoy a different take on a particular culture.
But the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has urged gappers seeking work to remember some important points.
Firstly, the department said travellers need to be prepared in order to secure employment in a foreign country.
"Find out what paperwork and permits you need in advance," it stated.
"If you arrive in Australia without a work permit you'll need to leave the country to get one."
The FCO urged gappers to try and learn the language before applying for a job in a particular country, as few employers will hire people who are unable to communicate with colleagues and customers.
Jobseekers also need to be persistent, the FCO stated.
"Sometimes it's tough to find work, but don't give up. If you've got the skills and the right to work there's probably a job out there for you," the department added.
"If there's a chance of getting work through your current employer, put together a proposal. Demonstrate the value to them of transferring you overseas."
