For travellers eager to get off the beaten track during their gap year, a trip to Israel can be an exciting option.
Louise Evans, spokesperson for the Israel Government Tourist Office, said the Middle Eastern nation appeals to a variety of visitors.
Travellers can visit historic cities, sample high culture or visit fantastic beaches for water sports and other adrenalin-fuelled activities, she said.
Ms Evans described Tel Aviv as "a buzzing, metropolitan city" with beautiful architecture and year-round sunshine.
There are also "fantastic" art galleries, she said, which are great for culture vultures who want to go and explore.
"The watersports are great there, they have fantastic beaches. They have a great nightlife and café culture," Ms Evans added.
"You've also got Old Jaffa nearby, with the traditional route to Jerusalem and the religious angle as well. In terms of culture they’re poles apart almost."
She explained that it takes just three hours to get from one end of Israel to the other, so it is easy for travellers to enjoy a broad experience.
For people seeking a gap year adventure, there are certain areas for hiking and cycling, while scuba diving is growing in popularity, she added.
And with a new airport opening in Eilat in 2014, the popularity of Israel among tourists is only set to increase.
