Visa law relaxation opens doors to Serbia

Visa law relaxation opens doors to Serbia

Serbia has enjoyed greater interest from the UK market following the relaxation of Visa laws two years ago, it has been claimed.

The National Tourism Organisation of Serbia said eight per cent more Brits have been visiting the landlocked southern European nations in recent times.

Gordana Plamenec, chief executive of the body, also pointed out that Brits are staying longer in the country – with some visitors participating in gap year activities.

He explained that 30 international airlines are landing and taking off from Belgrade airport, showing how far Serbia has come since the civil war of the early 1990s.

Mr Plamenec said city breaks and festivals are particularly popular with foreign visitors – but there are also gap year adventure options available.

"We are continuing to work with our cultural itinerary, promoting sites all the way from historic times, from ancient Roman emperors through to hero monuments, monasteries and fortresses, as well as to contemporary art and museums," he stated.

"This 'Roads of the Roman Emperors' tour will be [carried out] in conjunction with four countries in the region, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Serbia, and will [coincide] with the wine routes of these countries."

Mr Plamenec added that there is plenty of scope for activity trips, with the tourist board now promoting cycling, hiking, climbing and more.
