For Australian student Maddison, taking a gap year is all about "getting into the real world".
The Brisbane resident, who has just completed her Year 12 studies, explained how a break from education appeals to her before heading on to university.
Speaking to ABC Brisbane, the school leaver said she would spend the next year working in business on the Sunshine Coast.
"I've studied hard the last 12 years, and I do want to go to university but I thought I wanted to get into the real world, get a bit of experience before I get back and hopefully make a bit of money while I'm at it," Maddison said.
She said she is expecting to work hard during her gap year, but is also moving to the coast for adventure during her year out.
Maddison added that the practical experience gained from the world of work should be helpful in the future once she has obtained a degree.
PD Jose, chairperson of the Career Development Services at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, recently told IANS that gap year internships can often lead to full-time employment in the future.
