New research suggests that annual travel insurance policies, which may be necessary when heading off on a gap year abroad, can save regular travellers a considerable amount of money.
According to findings from MoneySupermarket.com, separate cover for three trips, perhaps adventure travel or overseas voluntary work, would typically cost 15 per cent more than using a full-year policy.
The study also revealed that levels of cover, particularly for medical expenses, baggage and cancellation, are usually more generous on an annual package.
Bob Atkinson, travel insurance expert at MoneySupermarket.com, said: "Heading abroad for a much needed break is always exciting but it's essential to make sure you … are fully covered before you go."
He added that many people leave travel insurance until the last minute and overlook the finer details such as the varying levels of coverage available.
Earlier this month, John Lawler, operations manager at Madadventurer.com, said an essential part of the gap year planning process is to ensure that travel insurance is sufficient to cover all likely activities.
