When planning a gap year overseas, Brits should consider travelling to Australia, which boasts a wealth of social, economic and lifestyle opportunities, according to one expert.
Tom Blackett, spokesperson for the Australian Visa Bureau, said it is "no wonder" that Australia remains one of the most popular gap year destinations, especially for people from the UK.
"Imagine living in a country that speaks English, enjoys wit and sarcasm and has a love of pub culture and cricket - but without the bad weather. Well, this place exists – Australia," he added.
Mr Blackett said Australia is a "young and prosperous" gap year destination ideal for those seeking adventurous outdoor pursuits, work experience or opportunities to volunteer during their time out.
A recent poll by Post Office Travel Insurance found the UK's over-50s were increasingly keen to travel further afield on extended breaks.
Australia was named the gap year destination they would most like to visit, while New Zealand, the US, Singapore and Spain completed the top five.
