India an 'extremely hospitable' gap year country

When considering a gap year in Asia, travellers should bear in mind that India is an "extremely hospitable" country, one commentator has noted.

Paarth Kumar, editor at Indiatravelblog.net, said most people from the popular gap year destination believe in the old phrase 'Atithi Devo Bhava', which can be translated as 'the guest is God'.

The expert went on to offer guidance for those planning a gap year in India, to ensure their adventure goes without a hitch.

"Know your destination before heading out … visit with an open mind and heart [and] wear appropriate clothes. Eat fresh, proper food and drink mineral water always," he said.

Last month, Tom Hall, travel editor at Lonely Planet, said the coming year would probably see gap year destinations in south-east Asia rising further in popularity, due to the value they offer Brits on a budget.

"Indonesia is another destination that's attracting more visitors than it has for a few years," he added.
