Young people can set themselves apart in the jobs market by focusing on their transferable and vocational skills, which could be developed through gap years.
Denise Taylor, a career psychologist with amazingpeople.co.uk, has highlighted the fact that many of the skills needed for the workplace can be gained outside university courses.
She said that the key abilities that employers look for are confidence, being able to work as part of a team and the ability to communicate well, which voluntary work overseas can provide experience in.
Ms Taylor added: "[They should] be willing to suggest things in many cases and certainly to do that little bit more than their job description might say."
She concluded that this is what young people should really consider before deciding on their career and education plan.
Earlier this year, UK and northern Europe general manager at Tourism Australia Rodney Harrex claimed that Australia presents some excellent work experience opportunities for young people looking to develop transferable skills.
