Gap year students need to keep up to date with the latest information before heading to Guatemala, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
It comes after the country was at high alert following heavy rain damage, flooding and landslides which have affected main intercity roads.
Parts of the country are also in a state of emergency, and the officewas advising gap year students to monitor local media and remain in contact with their tour operator as some travel routes could face disruption.
"The national disaster agency CONRED is recommending against long road journeys through Guatemala. The rainy season in the country normally runs from June to November, coinciding with the hurricane season in the Caribbean," advised the office.
Furthermore, it was advised that gap year students in Guatemala do not travel near the Pacaya volcano as significant activity persists since a strong eruption on May 27th earlier this year.
