Gap year students visiting Mexico are becoming more adventurous, seeking out authentic and exciting activities to undertake, according to an industry expert.
Leah Griffin, destination manager for Central America, Mexico and Caribbean at Gap Adventures, said that while many people look to do the normal tourist excursions, such as visiting the Mayan site of Chichen Itza, gappers are now keen to try out other pursuits.
"This applies to not only the activities they choose to fill their time with, but also the food they seek out. For example, our chief experience officers will sometimes bring their group to a local market for lunch or dinner rather than a tourist restaurant," she added.
Her words were recently supported by research from cottages4you, which found that today's travellers are looking for activity and a chance to learn new skills, through activities such as voluntary work.
Furthermore, one in ten people are looking for an overseas adventure where they can specifically indulge in their favourite hobby.
