Benefits of becoming a ski instructor - Alltracks Academy

Date added: Tuesday 11th July 2017

A quick look around the Year Out Group website shows you just how many diverse and exciting gap year options there are out there. So whatever your interests and goals, you’re bound to be able to find something suitable that you will find enjoyable but also challenge you so you really have a worthwhile gap year.

Alltracks Academy is a long standing member of the Year Out Group and I wanted to write a blog outlining a few reasons on why you should consider becoming a ski instructor on your year out. If you are a strong intermediate skier or snowboarder (or better), our gap year ski instructor courses and snowboard instructor coursescould be the the perfect opportunity for you.

The benefits of training to become a ski instructor

1.     Become an expert skier. This is a skill that will stay with you for life. We’re used to people arriving as pretty accomplished skiers or snowboarders, but nobody has been even close to being too good for what’s of offer.

2.     Learn to teach. Being able to teaching people skills is a given for almost all management roles. Teaching is largely about communication and having the ability to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life will stand you in good stead for the future and this is something all good ski instructors can do well. There is no set way and each person has their own approach - BUT, there are tools you can learn to help adopt a flexible, engaging way to reach out to people. Your instructor training classes prepare you for this and you’ll undergo plenty of practice

3. Learn to manage a group in a challenging environment. We all know the mountains can be a potentially dangerous environment here accidents can happen. You’ll be receiving training from some of the most experienced and well qualified coaches and guides and you will begin to learn about group management. This is also covered in the CSIA ski instructor courses.

4. Gain recognised qualifications. I don’t think a year out has to be primarily about earning another piece of paper. However, by earning official Canadian Ski Instructor Alliance qualifications, not only does the course have structure where you will be forced to consider the technical aspect of skiing and teaching, you can clearly demonstrate that your gap year has had a clear focus and purpose -as well as great fun.

5. Work as a ski instructor. With your new qualifications, you have the potential opportunity to go on and work as an instructor. Many of our students go on to do this immediate after their course to help earn back some money, or they do it part time over their university holidays. It can be extremely rewarding to put your qualifications and skills into practice in the real world and get paid to do a sport that you love.

ALLTRACKS runs a variety of courses at Whistler, Canada where you can train to become an instructor. Here are a few points that we feel are important to conducting thorough programmes.

1.     We are based at 1 resort. By choosing to operate exclusively at only one resort (Whistler - the largest ski area in Canada), we feel we can offer the highest level of service - especially as one of the ALLTRACKS management team is based there year round.

2.     We limit ski coaching to 6 people per coach. This is a more expensive way of delivering our train but like most things, if you learn in small groups with others of a similar ability and experience, you’ll improve so much faster.

3.     Our courses are typically very popular so you will almost certainly find that you are with plenty of other people of a similar age/stage of life. However, the nice thing is that we have students from all over the world join us.

4.     If you do wish to go on to work after your course, I feel we are very well placed to help you with that. Indeed, every person who has completed our popular ski instructor internship has been able to go on and work for the Whistler Ski School.
