Oyster Worldwide - 11 reasons to make travel your New Year resolution

Date added: Friday 8th January 2016

As we draw close to the end of our first week of the new year, most people will have broken their ‘eat/drink less’ resolutions already. So how about making a positive resolution to travel more and as a result achieve greater things in 2016?

1) Help the environment

Admittedly there is an environmental impact when you travel but you can aim to be ‘net positive’ by getting involved in a conservation programme. From helping to conserve marine life to planting trees to reverse the effects of deforestation, there are many ways that volunteers can make a positive contribution.

2) Speak a new language

Learning a new language is easier than you probably remember from school; travellers often pick up language without a text book and the best way to learn a language is to be around native speakers and to be immersed in the culture. Pack your phrase book and travel-you will be amazed how quickly you begin to converse in a new language and you’ll be forgiven for not being word perfect.

3) Eat more exotic food

What we eat has a major impact on our health and general well being. When travelling, food becomes exciting again and you’ll find yourself thinking and talking about it more than usual. Discovering new fruit and veg, ways of cooking, ingredients, spices and tastes. Once you are home again, you can recreate these dishes and eat fewer beans on toast-much as we love it!

4) Learn a skill

We all have hobbies that we wish that we could dedicate more time to. Whether it’s a camera that has got dusty from neglect or the skis that are hidden at the back of the cupboard, it is time to give them some overdue TLC. Taking a course or spending a season abroad can be a real opportunity to improve your skill level.

5) Come face to face (almost!) with your favourite animal

For animal-lovers, seeing their favourite animal in their natural habitat is the stuff of dreams. Make 2016 the year that you make this reality. There are many animal conservation programmes worldwide that work to improve the welfare of all species.

6) Connect with local people As a traveller, you are one of the most privileged in the world. Do what you can to connect with local people, learn from them, understand their world and what factors influence their life opportunities. If you feel you can add value through volunteering, raising money or simply creating a shared experience (like a game of volleyball or joining in a festival) then a gap year provides many ways to do just that. Think about how you can continue to be a force for good when you finally arrive home.

7) See something amazing

With thousands of events, festivals and sights to see worldwide, it is often hard to know where to start. Write a list, start at the top and book a trip to see it. There is never a better time to start then right now.

8) Broaden your social circle

Do you feel like you constantly see the same faces? Perhaps it is time to meet new people. The beauty of travelling is that often you will meet fellow explorers in inspiring places. It forces you to consider your own beliefs, values and lifestyle and helps make space for people from different backgrounds in your life.

9) Set yourself a challenge

Sky dive, scuba dive, trek, cycle… Whatever the challenge, achieve it this year. Make challenges even more interesting by doing them overseas. Fly across a beautiful location and gain a unique perspective of a country, cycle through stunning scenery or dive in spectacular coral reefs.

10) Earn some money

Travel doesn’t have to cost the earth. Many work abroad, earning enough money to sustain them while they explore the country. It will give you the opportunity to begin to live like a local and to really get to know a destination. Start your own life abroad in 2016.

11) Find a new home

Most people who venture abroad become life-long travellers. Some people fall in love with the countries that they travel to and decide to move. Travelling can completely change you life goals and help you to find you ideal lifestyle. What are you waiting for? Go and explore!
