Gap year travellers have been told that China has some fascinating sites to visit in its main cities, although explorers should look further afield.
John Warner, managing director of Gap Adventures, said that there was nothing wrong with heading to larger cities, but "go further afield and visitors will discover that each area has its own unique customs, history and even food".
The expert added that some travellers may worry about the language barrier, however, this is rarely a problem when buying items such as tickets in the bigger cities.
"China's public transport system is ideal for those visitors who may want to undertake a more independent trip. It also allows people to get off the beaten track a bit more," he commented.
Year Out Group has 14 member organisations which offer well-organised and worthwhile gap years abroad in China, which might include conservation work or teaching English.
