A comprehensive travel insurance package is an essential part of a gap year abroad, according to an industry expert.
Orlando Crocket, an international hospitality business management student at Leeds Metropolitan University, recently joined a team in the Foreign Commonwealth Office to work on a campaign advising students to prepare well when travelling abroad.
"It is essential to take out travel insurance when taking any trip abroad, no matter how short your trip. And when participating in high-risk activities such as skydiving, skiing or snowboarding, you must ensure your policy covers these," he added.
Mr Crocket also said that rules given by instructors or guides should be followed in case local laws differ to customs in the UK.
The expert advised that gap year students should also take their European Health Insurance Card with them on their travels, however, he stated that this is not a substitute for a full travel insurance package.
The Foreign Commonwealth Office is also an excellent source of travel advice for gap year students, as it constantly updates information on individual countries.
