South America a 'worthwhile destination for a gap year student'

The current economic strength of Brazil and the successful reform of Chile should encourage gap year students to travel to South America.

Richard Oliver, chief executive of Year Out Group, said that the continent provides a variety of worthwhile, interesting and fulfilling activities, including voluntary work and expeditions.

He added: "These gap year programs provide an excellent opportunity for people to learn Spanish or Portuguese and to gain an understanding of the local culture. Skills gained on these adventures will improve an individual's employability and make them attractive to companies looking to expand in the region."

Brazil is currently on the up and could be looking for that expansion in the near future.

The South American country will host the football World Cup in 2014 and will be the first in the continent to be given the Olympic Games, which it will host in 2016.

Its economical situation is also performing well, with the Brazilian real being the best performing currency this year.

The country is furthermore home to a number of UK companies that have been involved in Brazil for decades. Rolls Royce supplies engines to the country's aerospace industry while GlaxoSmithKline also has a major plant there.ADNFCR-2556-ID-19431072-ADNFCR
