Taking a gap year abroad and travelling through different countries provides an exciting opportunity which many people have dreamed of, according to an expert.
Katerina Nikolas, writing for the travel section of Helium.com, said that many people have never ventured abroad as some fear that they will be out of their comfort zone and be stuck in strange cultures.
"One should worry not though, as unless travelling to some war-torn spot, disease-ravaged area, or top crime spot, you will land in a country offering you a unique insight into how other people live, and most likely catch the travel bug," she added.
Ms Nikolas advised that gap year travellers do their reading up before they book their travel, this way they can see the things that they plan to do.
She also advised gappers to embrace the local culture, stating that the best thing about international travel is meeting people from different parts of the world.
Last month, the Travel Foundation warned people to take their green habits with them whenever they go abroad.
