Gap year students will get more out of travelling by train as opposed to jumping on a plane, according to an industry expert.
Josephine Wasch, senior manager of international sales at VIA Rail Canada, said that when people travel by train they will get their own personal time to read a book, catch up on sleep or do some work.
"One of the other advantages in Canada, being such a large country and big distances to cover, is that when you take the train you get to relax and you get to see the scenery from out of your window," she added.
Ms Wasch also said that stopping off in smaller towns can give people the opportunity to experience different cultures, with various regions living in different ways to the next.
Ed Gillespie, writing for the Guardian, recently said that he loves the simple pleasures that overland forms of travel can bring, including the "vista of ever-changing views" outside the window.
