Gap year students 'should be covered for most eventualities'

Gap year students need to make sure that they have "comprehensive travel insurance to cover most eventualities", according to an expert.

Ian Bradley, spokesperson for AITO, said that it was especially important to have insurance for any "out of the ordinary" activities which a gap year student might be tempted to try.

"Many countries regularly update advice for travellers and insurance is just one of the ever-changing variables. A good travel agent or tour operator will be able to assist and point you in the right direction for specific requirements for each destination," he added.

Mr Bradley's words came as Lloyds TSB said that around 35.6 million Britons will head abroad for their main vacation this year.

It also found that while a third have their holiday and gap year plans finalised, nearly 60 per cent have yet to organise travel insurance for their adventures, despite 8.5 million admitting to requiring medical attention while abroad.
