Those planning their gap year need to make sure that they buy good quality travel insurance which covers all of their needs, according to an industry expert.
Scott Gorman, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's, said that policies do not have to be expensive if people look out for suitable deals.
He went on to say that the potential costs of not being covered should a catastrophe occur "are huge".
"Whether you're heading thousands of miles away or holidaying in the UK this summer, good quality travel insurance should be a must," Mr Gorman said.
Sainsbury's has recently launched a travel insurance deal which means that gap year students can save 25 per cent if they purchase online.
Mr Gorman also highlighted how illness or lost baggage can end up affecting a person's gap year adventure if they do not have suitable cover.
Recent events in Thailand and the British Airways strikes have illustrated to gap year students how important travel insurance is to them.
