Gap year students 'should still avoid Bangkok'

Gap year students who are planning on travelling to Bangkok have been told that the advice remains the same.

An update on the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website stated that only essential travel to Thailand's capital city is advised.

It added that the city of Chiang Mai has also seen a number of violent incidents, with some involving gunfire, and should be avoided too.

"If violence breaks out, you should remain indoors. You should also comply with any curfew in force. You should carry your passport or some form of ID and evidence of residence to gain access if stopped by the authorities," a spokesperson for the office added.

Furthermore, gap year students in other areas of Thailand have been told that they should take transport services which involve skirting around Bangkok.

In other news, gap year students travelling to South America have been advised against paying a visit to Jamaica, as a state of emergency in its capital Kingston has been called.
