Alaska offers 'once in a lifetime' gap year abroad

Gap year students can enjoy the adventure "of a lifetime" when they visit the US state of Alaska, according to an industry expert.

Jacqi Todd, UK representative for the Alaska Travel Industry, told gap year students that there is so much to do there they would find it difficult to see everything that the state has to offer in one trip.

However, she did advise that people should think about using different modes of transport in order to personalise their adventures.

Ms Todd added that bear spotting tours are popular activities to undertake in Alaska, while the mountains also contain "fantastic powder snow" for those gap year students who are looking for a ski-based volunteer experience.

She also said that those gap year students visiting the Winter Games in Vancouver should travel across to Alaska to work with husky teams and see the northern lights, making it a "pretty special" experience.
