Gap year travellers 'safer in numbers'

Students embarking on a gap year abroad should make sure that they travel in numbers, according to an expert.

Matt Myster, writing for the travel section of Helium.com, said that there are a "plethora" of advantages to adventuring with somebody else in tow.

"But for those of you who travel independently, when possible travel in groups and with tours. It's a somewhat good deterrent of keeping criminals and thieves away, or at least lowering the chance you'll get tagged. Also, you save money sharing," he added.

Mr Myster also advised that gappers should ensure that they have the correct currency native to the country that they are travelling to.

He continued that exchange rates from ATMs and banks can be confusing and can soar in big cities.

Gap year travellers going abroad to study in another country should make sure that their laptop has enough battery at the airport as they might be asked to turn it on in front of security staff.
