Doing something worthwhile on a gap year is imperative, and one student is using his time out of education to raise money for charity.
The South Wales Argus reported that Adam Blackwood, 18, plans to raise £5,000 for Cancer Research UK by riding the length and breadth of the UK.
Being spread over 12 months, the tour will be done in ten different stages, seeing him travel over 615 miles.
He will pay visits to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland on his journey in between work placements and preparation for university in 2011.
"Most people have a friend or family member who has had cancer. Maybe in the future the work of charities like Cancer Research can do something to stop that, and I would like to do something in biomedical science, so I could end up actually dealing with that too," he stated.
One of the benefits of taking a gap year, according to Year Out Group, is learning new skills which will be beneficial in employment or at university, such as fundraising, project management and maturity.
