Budget travel tips offered to gap year students

Gap year travellers have been told that it is possible to keep their costs down when they go on voluntary work placements abroad.

A blog posting on MoneyNing.com said that money can be saved in every area of an overseas adventure, from airfares and eating to transportation and currency.

Gappers need to plan in advance and visit discount websites to see if they can get deals on their flights, while return tickets can also be cheaper in many cases.

When eating, gap year students need to plan their meals, cook for themselves or try to carry meals over that they do not eat.

"Tourists usually take taxis since it's the laziest way to get from point A to B. Consider the subway or buses because it's sometimes easier and it is much cheaper," they added.

Furthermore, gap year travellers need to make sure that they have the correct currency to hand, rather than being charged large amounts for withdrawals at airports and through ATMs.
