Gap year in Russia 'perfect for culture vultures'

Gap year students looking for somewhere different to explore and who have an interest in history and culture should try out Russia, according to an industry expert.

Catrionna Grant, communications coordinator at Tucan Travel, said that Moscow in particular is full of monuments, architecture and "amazing museums" to see.

She added that contemporary culture is now emerging, with art galleries springing out of empty factory blocks, while cafes, nightclubs and bars are also scattered around the city.

"You are expected to adapt to the city, not the other way around, but this is part of its tremendous appeal because you really do have to try to get under the skin of the city and you will learn to appreciate its character from the inside out," Ms Grant added.

Furthermore, Moscow is also becoming a cheap destination for gap year students, with the average cost of a three-star hotel room falling by 39 per cent over the last 12 months.
