It's not just Bono and the Make Poverty History campaigners who are putting Africa at the top of their agenda - the continent is the most popular destination for gap year travellers, according to new research by Year Out Group

As students prepare to receive their A level results, many will be considering a gap year. Africa is top of their list, according to a new survey of Year Out Group members, with South Africa the most popular country for placements, Tanzania second and Ghana also featuring in Year Out Group's top 10.

Richard Oliver, Chief Executive of Year Out Group, comments: "Africa is more popular than ever as a gap year destination. There's a massive variety of activities to choose from, providing a plethora of opportunities for gapers both to make a difference and to have a life-changing experience.

"Countries such as South Africa, Tanzania and Ghana are relatively stable, the people very welcoming and the climate favourable. The landscape is stunning and there are plenty of opportunities for those who wish to travel independently at the end of their placement."

The popularity of Africa among gap year students reflects a general trend across the travel sector. The region as a whole is booming, with more and more Brits eager to discover its natural wonders.

English-speaking countries figure high-up in Year Out Group's top 10. As well as the African nations where English is widely spoken, Canada, India and the UK also feature near the top of the table.

Richard Oliver comments: "The language barrier is one of the biggest hurdles to overcome abroad and we’ve found that, while many students choose a gap year specifically to improve their knowledge of languages such as Spanish and French, the majority opt for a country where English is widely spoken."

Indeed, staying in the UK is an increasingly popular option. Richard Oliver comments: “A gap year may seem synonymous with travel abroad, but there's a wide range of options in Britain. Whether learning a new skill, volunteering or filling a structured work placement, gappers will gain similar knowledge and experiences at significantly less cost in the UK than overseas. In addition they have the choice of being based at home or gaining their independence by moving temporarily to another part of the country."

Canada is also rising in popularity but the USA does not feature in Year Out Group's top 10 at all. Many students have been put off the USA by tight visa regulations and the lengthy interview process.

Year Out Group is a not-for-profit organisation. Its carefully vetted 38 member companies are specialists in their field and comply with a strict Code of Practice and Operating Guidelines. The range of programmes available in the UK and more than 70 countries worldwide includes study courses, cultural exchanges, expeditions, work placements and voluntary work.
